Education System in the UK
The education system in the UK is separated into Key Stages. Here is a general list from the youngest to the oldest:
Early Years Primary | 3-5 years old – Nursery and Reception |
Key Stage 1 Primary | 5-7 years old – Year 1 and Year 2 |
Key Stage 2 Primary | 7-11 years old – Year 3, 4, 5, and 6 |
Key Stage 3 Secondary | 11-14 years old – Year 7, 8, and 9 |
Key Stage 4 Secondary | 14-16 years old – Year 10 and Year 11 |
Further Education College/Sixth Form | 16-18 years old – Year 12 and Year 13 |
Higher Educaiton University | 18+ years old |
In the UK, people aged between 5 and 16 must be in education (Key Stage 1-4). Children take different exams at each stage of the education system, and I will cover this in another post.
Regarding nurseries, there are private and non-private nursery schools available, as well as nurseries within primary schools. All three and four year olds are entitled to 15 hours of free nursery education for 38 weeks of the year.
Primary education focusses on literacy and numeracy for all children.
Secondary education ends with GCSEs.
Further education is known for the A-Level assessment.
